Truth is not a human invention, so it was never ours to reshape. A Standard We Did Not Set
Truth is often treated as something a culture arrives at together, a consensus that can be renegotiated as opinion shifts. Scripture says otherwise: God set the standard of truth the way He set the sun and the boundaries of the sea, and a standard we did not set is not ours to move.
God's unchanging character is exactly why His people have stable ground to stand on. If truth shifted with the culture, there would be nothing solid underneath it - only sand. Because God does not change, His people are not destroyed by every new wind of opinion.
Sacred Truth, Loving Obedience
Jesus ties love directly to obedience - not obedience that earns love, but obedience that flows naturally from love already present. Truth is not a fence meant to pen people in. It is the shape love takes once it has taken root, kept fresh in us by the Spirit of truth, who teaches and reminds us of what is real.
What Happens When Lies Distort Truth
Scripture treats confusion and heresy as the predictable result of truth being bent rather than proclaimed. Paul warned that a time would come when people would prefer teachers who told them what they wanted to hear over sound doctrine - not a single dramatic rejection of truth, but a slow drift toward comfortable distortion.
The result is stagnation and confusion - a people tossed back and forth by every wind of teaching, unable to move forward together because they no longer share a fixed point to measure progress against.
Bring It to Light, and Let It Shine
Lies depend on staying hidden. Truth needs no such protection, because it was never afraid of being examined. A claim that cannot survive scrutiny was probably never truth to begin with.
Jesus pictures truth's proclamation as a city on a hill: impossible to hide, meant to be seen from a distance. Truth left unspoken doesn't stay quietly true - it gets crowded out by whatever voice was willing to speak while it stayed silent.
Grounded, Not Adrift
The foundational truth of who God is and what He requires is not up for ongoing negotiation. It was set before we arrived, and it will still be standing after we are gone.
Truth doesn't change, because it was never a human product. It is rooted in the unchanging character of God - solid ground worth standing on, worth proclaiming clearly, and worth defending against every quiet compromise that tries to wear it down.
